Symptoms that delivery is approaching: notice at the end of pregnancy

Around the 38th week of pregnancy our world turns upside down: the baby is about to arrive. Future mothers tend to be more nervous, certain fears increase and any sign in our body is carefully observed due to the possibility that the day of delivery has arrived. But when delivery approaches and these changes happen to you, you can be calm, they are normal .

The descent of the belly, the increase in contractions, the loss of the mucous plug … have you already noticed any of these symptoms? There is no need to rush to the hospital: they mean that labor is approaching (although it is not imminent) and they are perfectly common.

Expulsion of the mucous plug

Towards the end of pregnancy, the cervix begins to thin and dilate, so the mucus that closes the opening of the uterus can move, fall and exit through the vagina.

It is a gelatinous flow, thick and transparent, abundant, which we will see if the early dilation or effacement of the cervix is already evidently underway.

It does not hurt, you may not even notice if it falls in the toilet or falls gradually over several days. You may need a panty liner during these because of the increased flow. Sometimes, the mucous plug can be accompanied by reddish or brown threads, it is not worrying either.

Increased regular contractions

You can also take it easy if your contractions increase but they are still not regular. Let us remember that the contractions of the uterus are the increase in the pressure of the abdominal wall, which progressively reaches a high point, then descends and finally disappears.

This increase in pressure may be accompanied by a sensation of pain that is normally located in the lower abdomen and/or lumbar area, and which also subsides when the uterus relaxes. Check out more interesting articles on our parenting site.

While they are irregular, the contractions are an indication that labor is approaching, but not that we have to go to the hospital. To differentiate “false” or irregular contractions, we will take into account that they appear at different time intervals and the intensity or perception of pain varies (some hurt significantly more than others). In addition, they last less than 40 seconds and usually appear at specific times: when doing some type of physical activity, after sexual intercourse… They usually subside or do not increase with rest.

In contrast, true labor contractions cause pain that starts in the back and radiates sideways and forwards to the lower abdomen .

They increase in intensity, they occur every regular periods with a frequency of 3 to 5 contractions every 10 minutes. It also increases its duration. When you are in labor, there are at least 2 or 3 intense contractions lasting approximately 40 to 60 seconds every 10 minutes.

light stained

Mild vaginal bleeding , dark brown or red in color, may occur. If this spotting is of little quantity, we should not worry, since it can occur after having had sexual intercourse , after a vaginal examination or due to the small modifications that occur at the level of the cervix during the days or weeks prior to delivery.

Small vaginal hemorrhages at the end of pregnancy are the result of changes in the cervix at this stage of pregnancy and are punctual, they do not last for several days.

When the bleeding is important , when there is an intense flow, it does involve seriousness and we have to go to the doctor immediately.

baby fit

“Tummy tuck” or baby nesting . The descent of the fetus into the pelvic cavity usually occurs between two and four weeks before delivery, and is more evident especially in first-time mothers.

The baby’s head stops “floating” freely and engages, remaining fixed in the pelvis. You may not notice this change with the naked eye, but you do notice that you can breathe a little better (the pressure on the diaphragm decreases), the stomach also releases something, which may improve digestion.

On the other hand, you will also notice the joints of the pelvis more loaded, pain can occur , an increase in cramps in the groin and the perineal area is more pressured.

pee more often

As a result of this fitting of the baby, you can also feel other less pleasant symptoms.

At this time, your bladder is under more pressure and you will probably have to go to the bathroom more often .

Lack of energy

Some women do not feel the “nest syndrome” (with an increase in vitality and desire to do things), but they are excessively fatigued by the discomforts of the final stretch of pregnancy, because they do not rest or sleep well …

The desire for the baby to be born, especially if the delivery is delayed, influences the emotional and physical state of the future mother. Patience, rest and relaxation as much as possible is what we need right now.

How to know that the day has come?

These are the symptoms you will feel in the last weeks of pregnancy as delivery approaches .

When the day comes, you will notice two unmistakable signs that labor is imminent : strong, regular, rhythmic labor contractions and/or rupture of the pouch .
